Mikel Graham Interview
Mikel Graham graduated in 2004 with top honors from Horizon Science Academy Cleveland High School, becoming the first community school graduate in Ohio to receive a full scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In June, he will be awarded a dual bachelor's degree in aeronautics and astronautics and in philosophy. After a summer stint teaching physics to freshman MIT students physics, Mikel will attend Georgia Tech, where he will pursue a master's degree in propulsion sciences. In May, Mikel told the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions about his experiences growing up and studying at military schools in the United States, Japan and Guam, before moving to east Cleveland, where he found the public school environment unsatisfying, until the day his mother accidentally stumbled across a brochure promoting Horizon Science Academy. Horizon Science Academy has set up an account to raise funds to defray Mikel's graduate expenses. Contact them at mikelgradfund@hsas.org.

ADVANCEMENT PROJECT DEMANDS FELONY CHARGES AND POSSIBLE EXPULSION BE DISMISSED
January 10, 2007 Sabrina Herndon, a Black student at Palm Beach Gardens High School was 1.5 credits shy of a high school diploma when a male assistant principal at her school tried to remove her from the girls locker room for wearing a strapless top under a jacket by physically carrying her out while in a chokehold. Palm Beach County Public School officials may derail a 17-year old high school senior from a college bound track to one in the juvenile justice system due to an incident stemming from a dress code violation. This is consistent with the trend in Florida to over-use suspensions, expulsions, and arrests that result in the needless denial of a quality education and lead students into unforgiving juvenile and criminal justice systems.

Dunn High School in Dunn NC -- Part 3
This video of Dunn High (Middle) School was recorded in June of 1992. Dunn High School opened in 1926 and officially ceased to exist after the graduating class of 1985. After that, Dunn High School became Dunn Middle School and served in that capacity for approximately ten to twelve years. Then it was completely demolished in the late 1990s to make way for a new elementary school, which was built on the same site. Unfortunately, nothing now remains of Dunn High School but of course the moving memories of the people in every generation who walked its small town halls. I hope this four-part video will be a blessing all who attended, worked and taught at Dunn High School. Blessings -- Andy Tart

Toronto's Model Schools for Inner Cities
Five years ago, the Toronto District School Board started the Model Schools for Inner Cities project. It gives seven schools (plus the community of schools around each of them) extra money to provide teachers with innovative teaching practices, brings community support into the school, and has worked hard to welcome parents and increase their participation in the school. Their most recent evidence shows it's working - kids are liking school, teachers are liking school and they're all learning. But it's an expensive program - can the board sustain it? Can it afford not to?
