That began to change in 2006 when the province passed legislation requiring mandatory post-secondary training and licensing for paralegals.  Paralegals are not qualified lawyers but often act as legal agents, typically in areas such as traffic offences, small claims court and some legal tribunals. Would taking a criminal justice class be helpful to someone ...

Even if you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid that the job market/economy is just saturated with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will lie to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their [more...]

Southington, Cheshire court merger discussed at Law Day program ...

Similar consolidations are happening all over Connecticut. Meccariello said state lawmakers crafted the legislation to reduce the number of probate courts in the state from 117 to 54. Probate courts are mostly self-sustaining, sending the fees they collect for their services to a state office, which then pays the judge and staff. Southington pays less than $10,000 each year toward maintaining the probate court, springing for items such as paper, postage and scanning documents. Cheshire, which is expected to account for one-third of the cases, will contribute a proportionate amount of money, [more...]

There's another concern paralegals share: cost. "It's going to become a lot more expensive to practise," says Wanda Forsythe, chair of the school of legal and public administration at Toronto's Seneca College. And those costs will be passed down to the public. Thanks to a new education requirement, people wanting to take up the profession will now have to pay college tuition for a two- to four-year program; after that there are insurance costs, and a $500 application fee to the law society. Experienced paralegals could skip the education requirement if they paid $1,075 and wrote an exam. (Of [more...]

Is Sexting Child Pornography? « California Family Law Paralegal

After trying to crack down on teenage sexting by charging offenders with felony child-porn offenses, states are rethinking their approach. Perhaps, some argue, a split-second decision made by an impulsive teen mind should not carry the risk of decades on a sex-offender registry. Nebraska, Utah, and Vermont all changed their laws last year to reduce severity of the penalties in recognition of the sexualized culture that pervades sites like MySpace and Facebook. Fourteen other states are considering new laws that would treat underage sexters differently from adult child pornographers. On [more...]

Can These Numbers Be Right? FCC Paperwork Nightmare = 57 Million ...

Greg Sidak of Georgetown University Law School found that the number of telecom lawyers–as measured by membership in the Federal Communications Bar Association–grew by a stunning 73% in the late 1990s. That was largely driven by a 37% hike in FCC spending and a tripling of the number of pages of regulations in the FCC Record in the post-Telecom Act period. Sidak argued, “If one assumes (very conservatively) that the average income of an American telecommunications lawyer is $100,000, then the current membership of the FCBA represents an annual expenditure on legal services of at least [more...]
