Does race influence who gets suspended in Georgia schools? The AJC has a story today about increasing concerns that African-American students are being pushed out of traditional schools in Georgia and into alternative schools for minor offenses. I hesitate to offer this up as discussion topic because the conversation often goes to stereotypes and racist rhetoric without any real consideration of the issue at hand. I would like to bypass such knee-jerk reactions and have an honest discussion about whether race influences who is disciplined and how severely in our schools. As a reporter who had [more...]

Having a low level job is not where many people would like to spend their careers. I'm having trouble finding a new job, what's the fastest way to ...
I’m having trouble finding a new job, what’s the fastest way to enter into a new field? I have recently graduated with a certificate in the Legal Administrative Assistant Program at my school. I am working with the placement office and have posted my resume’ on every job search site I can think of. I get e-mails back saying “We’re sorry, but we’re looking for someone with experience.” I think my problem may be that, other than college, I have had no experience in an office-type setting before. All of my previous jobs have been in retail. Also, I have not worked for nearly two [more...]

godoompah March 8th, 2010 on 1:36 pm the only real way to get a degree is to go to a real school and work hard like everyone else. If it sounds to easy to be true, it is! matt March 8th, 2010 on 3:03 pm Ask them one simple question – are you “regionally accredited” to give bachelor’s degrees in paralegal or not. Yes or no. If they say “no” or they waffle and try to tell you that being “regionally accredited” is not important, then run away as fast as you can, they are bogus. Top Reasons to Become a Paralegal | Criminal Justice School Guide
Paralegals were recently listed as CNBC.com’s 7th Best Job in America for 2010- and we are not surprised! Here is a list of reasons why we feel becoming a paralegal is an excellent career choice for individuals of all types. Paralegals are in High Demand. As demand for legal services grows, so does the need for paralegal assistance. This is partially because law firms are able to cut costs by hiring paralegals instead of additional lawyers. Also, other types of organizations (insurance companies, real estate and title insurance firms, corporate legal department, and banks) are beginning [more...]

Paralegal SLO
The number of lawyers affected at big firms is tiny when measured against the thousands of jobs disappearing at brokerage firms and banks. But in the rarefied world of corporate law, layoffs are unusual. It is striking to have just 20 associates sent packing — as a spokesman confirmed had happened at Clifford Chance, which has 3,900 lawyers worldwide. Lawyers at firms that have taken such drastic steps say that the problem is simply that they have too many people with the wrong kinds of expertise at the wrong time. Sonnenschein, for example, cut about 24 of its 700 lawyers last month, [more...]

The duties of a paralegal will depend on what kind of law firm he or she works for. Generally, a paralegal will perform lots of administrative duties and do research. “So I guess you're stuck with me” « Stellavision
As I get older, and reflect on life’s milestones, I doubt they’ll get much bigger than this one—Feb. 8, 2010. Three months ago today. It’s the day I officially assumed responsibility for Austin, bringing him home from Kentucky so that he and I could become a family. I’m not entirely sure why, but it has me feeling a little emotional today. Maybe it’s the recognition that it’s Mother’s Day weekend. That means Father’s Day is not too far away. For a time, I expected that the significance of Father’s Day would not live beyond my own Dad (who celebrated his 91st birthday a few [more...]

Up until recently, I did not know much about what paralegals do, except that they typically hold less responsibility than a full-fledged lawyer.
