How do I check the reputation of a paralegal training school? I’m considering a career change, at age 48, to become a paralegal. I received a Bachelors degree in Social Science in December 2003 but took some time off from school to be home with my kids. I’m interested in becoming a paralegal but was wondering which would better to have: a paralegal certificate which would take about 9 months or an Associates degree in paralegal studies which would take two years? The ten courses I would need for the certificate are 30 hours each while the ones for the degree would last a whole semester so I’m guessing I’d be receiving more education since I’d be in each class longer. To get a job as a paralegal, you will need at least an associate’s degree and probably a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies (which will be fine when you go to law school since you need a bacehlor’s degree). Then, you’ll start out at the bottom and the only way to learn is to take a low-paying job and you would probably need to be a paralegal for a few years before you think you have learned enough to help you prepare for a career as an attorney.
