In her role, Napolitano plays a key role in ensuring the security of Americas cyber infrastructure and networks as part of leading the nation's collective efforts to secure the US from counterterrorism; border security; immigration enforcement; and disaster preparedness, response and recovery. She has built upon the skills and resources of the Department by deploying the best that science and technology have to offer. Prior to this post, Napolitano was in her second term as Governor of Arizona where she was recognized as a national leader on homeland security, border security and immigration. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association and was named one of the top five governors in the country by Time Magazine. World leaders make progress on climate change and disarmament (Ban Ki-moon)
United Nations, New York, 29 September 2009 - The meetings of world leaders at the General Assembly over the past week have made progress on major issues including climate change, nuclear disarmament and the global financial crisis with the United Nations playing a pivotal role, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today. It is still early days, of course, but this has been one of the most engaged GA sessions in years, he told a news conference at UN Headquarters in New York, summing up the opening of the Assemblys 64th annual General Debate and the meetings that took place on the sidelines. UNA-UK hosts UN Secretary-General pt. 1
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered a speech under UNA-UK's auspices in his first major public appearance in the UK. In the speech, entitled 'Securing the Common Good: The United Nations and the Expanding Global Agenda', Mr Ban praised UNA-UK's role in cultivating constructive UK government engagement with the UN and in 'explaining the UN to the UK while helping to convey the concerns of British citizens to the UN'. He said that the international community had 'a unique opportunity to enhance the UN's central role in world affairs' to deliver results for a more prosperous, more secure and more just world.
