Ray Kurzweil about Singularity and Technology P1

This aired on 5-30-08. Typical Ray Kurzweil performance. Early mention of how Ray is working with Google co-founder (Larry Page) for a government sanctioned initiative. That's an interesting name to come up, but of course it was only in the context of solar panels rather than the open-secret DARPA / NASA / Google military operation to kick-start the 'Technological Singularityandquot; (god-like AI outcome with humans neurologically merged into it / a hive-mind) in roughly 5 years time. This is imporant because in Ray's books and speeches he speaks about the Singularity as if it is inevitable, of course, but frames it as if it will inherently or naturally rise out from predictable technological progress, alone. Skysails sa german affordable technology which makes use of wind power. Under optimal conditions conceptors claim to reduce by up to 50% fuel consumption. On annual average yet, 10 to 40% reduction might be expected. Their idea seems so basic that one might wonder why no one achieved it earlier. Great ideas were simple actually but not simplistic. By the way, I'm glad that digital terrestrial television is available in my region (it's not in Siberia, it's near the french and german boarder) after having waited for it for a very long time. This documentary is from a german broadcast and the original movie has a crispy quality that I couldn't render in flash video of course. But I enjoy it yet. 3. Technology and Revolution in Roman Architecture

Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner discusses the revolution in Roman architecture resulting from the widespread adoption of concrete in the late second and first centuries BC She contrasts what she calls innovative Roman architecture with the more traditional buildings already surveyed and documents a shift from the use of concrete for practical purposes to an exploration of its expressive possibilities. The lecture concludes with a discussion of the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia at Palestrina, an impressive terraced complex that uses concrete to transform a mountain into a work of architecture, with ramps and stairs leading from one level to the next and porticoes revealing panoramic views of nature and of man-made architectural forms.
