How do I become a paralegal? | Paralegal Certificate Program

You can get your BA in whatever and then get a certificate (which the whole point of me becoming a paralegal is to avoid university costs) or you can get an associates degree in paralegal studies. The community college I attend, however, doesn’t have a program in paralegal studies. Instead it has a criminal justice program which lists ‘paralegal’ as a job opportunity. The closest school with a paralegal program is two hours away and commuting plus trying to schedule around work would be a pain if not nearly impossible. I need to know if the requirements for a paralegal position in the [more...]

Can These Numbers Be Right? FCC Paperwork Nightmare = 57 Million ...

Greg Sidak of Georgetown University Law School found that the number of telecom lawyers–as measured by membership in the Federal Communications Bar Association–grew by a stunning 73% in the late 1990s. That was largely driven by a 37% hike in FCC spending and a tripling of the number of pages of regulations in the FCC Record in the post-Telecom Act period. Sidak argued, “If one assumes (very conservatively) that the average income of an American telecommunications lawyer is $100,000, then the current membership of the FCBA represents an annual expenditure on legal services of at least [more...]

What Should be the Ordinary Course of Business: Reviewing ESI in ...

Not using litigation support system to review electronically stored information is comparable to whining about using Lexis or Westlaw for online legal research. Or worse yet, a lawyer refusing to use a word processing program because they only know how to dictate.  It might even violate an attorney’s duty of competency to their client, due to the volume of ESI driving up costs by refusing to use the tools to make review cost effective. Few attorneys can explain with a straight face to their client that they spent 7 hours looking for 10 emails on 15 CD’s that could have been located in [more...]

Paralegals Rank High on Best Jobs List

Paralegals ranked an impressive 17th on the list of 200 jobs due to favorable work conditions, high employment outlook, and low physical demands, stress levels and hours (hmm, I’d bet some paralegals would disagree). Court reporters ranked 28th and federal judges ranked 64th. Lawyers, listed as 82nd, ranked poorly due to high stress levels inherent in the profession. “Attorneys and stockbrokers may earn considerably more than bookbinders or telephone repair technicians , but these high-powered careers are hurt by anxiety, as both rank [more...]

Sheep Submission: Timeslips + Chicago = Hell | The Collared Sheep ...

I lived in Chicago my first year out of college and it was hands-down, the worst year of my life. I moved to Chicago in the fall of 2002 to study improv, but somehow found myself working as a paralegal, barely doing comedy, hardly making enough money to pay my bills, and wading through a sea of depression. God knows the paralegal gig didn’t help the crippling depression part. I’m eager-to-please and hardworking. I tend to obey rules blindly and follow directions, so things at the law firm started off swimmingly. Each paralegal tallied his or her time using a program called Timeslips. [more...]
