Not Just Arizona: From Utah To Maryland, States Eye Harsh Immigration Laws Arizona isn't the only state looking to take extreme measures to crack down on illegal immigration. At least 10 other states -- many inspired by Arizona -- are talking about enacting similarly draconian legislation. And most aren't places that are traditionally thought of as hot-spots in the immigration battle. With a major hat tip to Think Progress, here's a quick rundown: ⢠Oklahoma: The state has already passed a law that makes it harder for illegal immigrants to obtain IDs or public assistance, lets police [more...]

On June 10, Pablo Javier Almaguer (pictured) of Hidalgo will become the first legal-services attorney to serve as chairman of the State Bar of Texas board of directors, according to Bar spokeswoman Kim Davey. At the Bar board’s April 16 meeting in Austin, Almaguer, an attorney with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid in Edinburg, defeated Talmage Boston, a shareholder in Winstead in Dallas, and Warren Cole, owner of the Law Office of Warren Cole in Houston, for the chairmanship. Texas Lawyer Blog: Texas Supreme Court Nixes Mandatory Disclosure ...
In an April 14 letter, Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson notified State Bar of Texas president Roland Johnson of the court’s decision against mandatory disclosure. The news release provided a link to the letter in which Jefferson wrote: “Of course, we should be concerned if clients are unable to recoup sums occasioned by lawyer malpractice, or if the public would view the non-existence of such insurance a critical factor in the decision to retain a lawyer. But, as your process demonstrated, there is little evidence of either circumstance." In 2007, the Supreme Court asked the [more...]

Morning News, 4/29/10 | Center for Immigration Studies
The law's supporters hope the departure of illegal immigrants will help dismantle part of the underground economy here and create jobs for thousands of legal residents in a state with a 9.6 percent unemployment rate. Kavanagh says day labor is generally off the books, and that deprives the state of much-needed tax dollars. "We'll never eliminate it, just like laws against street prostitution," he says. "But we can greatly reduce the prevalence." Day laborers do jobs including construction, landscaping and household work for cash paid under the table. Those jobs have been harder to find since [more...]

David Lindsay: Bring Back The Old Economy
Their average starting salary was $56,921. Is an economy dominated by the government and financial sectors good for America? The downside of too much government is well known to conservatives, and the downside of having too large a financial sector should be increasingly clear. Wall Street does not do much for Main Street. Lawrence Mitchell, a professor of business law at George Washington University, notes that empirical evidence is clear that the American public stock market rarely has been a significant factor in financing industrial enterprises in the United States. The only American [more...]

No MBAs, no arrogant doctors, no government red tape, no formulary of 5,000 drugs, and no cadre of specialists making large salaries to do small tasks. Oh, and by the way, no computers either. You know what? Life expectancy wasn’t that much different (if you exclude the benefits of vaccinations and reduced infant mortality.) Costs were a lot lower. No one got rich in healthcare. Without all the research, the computerization, the fancy architecture, and the lack of John Wayne "I will not let this patient die" heroics, things weren’t really all that much worse when it came to living and [more...]

Is becoming a patent lawyer a good idea? :IQ Lawyers
Now, debate is intensifying among law-school academics over the integrity of law schools’ marketing campaigns. David Burcham, dean of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, considered second-tier, says the school makes no guarantees to students that they will obtain jobs. OK, I have to interject right here. Did a dean of a law school basically say you could go through all the nonsense of getting into law school, law school, ethics exam, bar exam and you should not expect some sort of gainful employment after you are through? You might as well go to Las Vegas and put your tuition money on the [more...]

Texas Attorney General
That evening, after discussing a plan to lure someone back to the hotel to blackmail or rob him, Galloway, Anderson, and Bayless went to a bar. There they met David McCoy. Bayless talked McCoy into returning to the hotel with them. Once there, the men killed McCoy, wrapped his body in a blanket, and put it into Galloways car. Driving both Galloways and McCoys cars, the group left Wichita. After Galloways car broke down, they abandoned it in a parking lot with McCoys body still inside. On September 7, the group arrived in Greenville, Texas. Galloway and Varga wanted more money, so [more...]

"paralegals' anniversary marks state recognition"
My, how time has flown for the paralegal profession in Texas! "Paralegals have made their way out of the figurative woods and into the light of a recognized profession since the State Bar of Texas created its paralegal division 25 years ago, an Austin woman who was instrumental in the landmark said Wednesday. "Debra Crosby told 30 people at a Petroleum Club luncheon that she entered the field more than 30 years ago because her husband was in law school and she had just earned a master's degree in English and needed a job. Crosby said her tenures as [more...]

Free PDF: Lawyer Referral Information Service State Bar of Texas ...
Given that the LRIS is a public service of the State Bar of Texas, the insurance requirement enhances the service’s credibility and reputation as a convenient, beneficial and professional way to find legal services in an era of increased competition. It is believed that the public has a higher level of expectation from a bar-sponsored program and the insurance requirement helps substantiate this expectation. Additionally, most lawyer referral services in Texas require professional liability insurance as a condition of membership. The next membership renewal cycle for the State Bar Lawyer [more...]

Texas Legal Legend Releases Memoir | LISWire
During his eight years as an assistant D.A. and nearly fourteen years as the elected district attorney in Houston, Texas, Vance was on a quest for justice for “the least, the last, and the left out.” He worked hard to reform the law, and introduced many innovations to address a multitude of crimes and better serve the public. All the while, Vance vigorously pursued convictions, and found time to try more cases than perhaps any elected prosecutor in a large city in America. Boomtown D.A. has it all. The delicate case of bringing charges against a sitting justice of the Texas Supreme Court [more...]

those of you coming to Law and Society in Chicago next month should note that the following 12 panels will be part of the "shadow CrimProf" gathering that Alice Ristroph and I have tried (somewhat ineptly) to assemble in the face of the staggeringly odd Law and Society panel rules. I'm excited to say that we have drawn about 50 scholars from schools across North America. It looks like the rooms have not yet been announced but the times and panels have been. I encourage you to attend as many of these panels as possible. The panelists themselves will have exchanged drafts of [more...]
