Laura tagged herself with this meme. I like that. Then she tagged me: Four jobs I've had: 1. My first job, other than babysitting, was at Southeastern Paralegal Institute. I worked there the summer after graduating from high school. Doing receptionist/filing/typing etc.---a job I was poorly suited for, as efficiency is hardly my middle name. My mom would call me at work and burst out laughing because my "Good morning, Southeastern Paralegal" sounded so terrified. 2. In college, I worked in the technology department--once again, very poorly suited for the job. I remember sitting at a computer, [more...]

Temporary Attorney: The Sweatshop Edition: An Open Letter To Dean ...
They don't even consider NYLS graduates for attorney positions. He might be able to get me an interview for a paralegal position though, but it's a long shot. (Mr. Matasar. I AM A LICENSED ATTORNEY, NOT A PARALEGAL!! I SPENT OVER $140,000 TO OBTAIN MY J.D. FROM NYLS AND I'M ADMITTED TO PRACTICE IN TWO JURISDICTIONS!!) 2) Contract Attorney work is GARBAGE. It's document review and can be done by "monkeys." It's not substantive legal experience, and is indicative of my not wanting to get a permanent job. (Meantime, I couldn't get any other work, as I've said. My friend even told him this, but [more...]

Paralegal SLO
The number of lawyers affected at big firms is tiny when measured against the thousands of jobs disappearing at brokerage firms and banks. But in the rarefied world of corporate law, layoffs are unusual. It is striking to have just 20 associates sent packing — as a spokesman confirmed had happened at Clifford Chance, which has 3,900 lawyers worldwide. Lawyers at firms that have taken such drastic steps say that the problem is simply that they have too many people with the wrong kinds of expertise at the wrong time. Sonnenschein, for example, cut about 24 of its 700 lawyers last month, [more...]

Civil Society in the Age of Obama: Faith-Based Initiatives
For example, Byron R Johnson, from the Center for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society at the University of Pennsylvania, has stated there is little reliable research proving the effectiveness of FBO-delivered programs. He further stated that there is also little evidence showing how FBO-delivered programs measure up against government-delivered programs (Canada and Ackerman 2003). Because of these concerns many have argued that social service funding should be left to secular governmental social service agencies. The supporters of FBO cite the history of religious organizations in the [more...]
