Cheryl Meril's Candid Blog- Nob Hill Notary: Zapp at Law or Crap ...

For those paralegals who want to be independent and have their own business, we become Legal Document Assistants and register with our county. We're required to have criminal background checks. It's the law! LDA's don't give legal advice, we merely direct self represented people to sources where they can obtain general law so we can prepare their legal forms. We then type their legal forms and file them with the court. In other words, LDA's are not supposed to apply the facts of one's case to the law or visa versa. This would be called the "Unauthorized Practice of Law". This is an excerpt of [more...]

Can you become a paralegal with an Associates in Liberal Arts?

2 Responses to “Can you become a paralegal with an Associates in Liberal Arts?” Comment from mailaccount63 Time April 23, 2010 at 8:33 pm Sure you can become a Paralegal with an Associates in Liberal Arts and a certificate in paralegal studies – BUT no employer in the field of Law will hire you. If you want to be marketable and get hired in TODAY’s job market, you need a BACHELORS degree in Paralegal Studies, from a traditional college/university. If obtaining employment is your true goal, then consider those “Certificates” to be scams. If you are just getting a [more...]

Why am I seeing job postings where some paralegals are making more ...

You need to be very, very careful. Most of these postings are fictitious and fabricated - just made up by temp agencies trying to lure in employees. Be very, very careful. Since this vocational field is shrinking (at an alarming rate), many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <that the job market/economy is just SATURATED with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will LIE to you. The root [more...]

What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I've always had an interest in the law and politics. While going to college I took a summer off to work as a receptionist in a law firm (I already had good secretarial skills, but no legal experience). Instead of returning to day time college classes, I continued to work at the law firm and went to college at night. The law firm promoted me to a legal secretarial position after only a few months, and the rest is history. 3. What is your favorite part of your job? What are the limitations of using a paralegal for family court ...

Being unsatisfied with a previous attorney is a poor reason for trying to go without one, but if winning or losing, and to what degree, is irrelevant to you, by all means use a paralegal. In my 37 years as a lawyer, I have had cases in which the client wanted a particular outcome, and often withheld information to try to make sure of the outcome. Naturally, the client blamed me when the outcome was not what the client wanted. I never guess or predict what a judge or jury will do. It depends on State law, and you didn’t tell us where you are. Only a few States allow non-lawyers to provide [more...]

Since traveling to London to study the paralegal profession there I have continued to monitor developments there. The legal educational system there causes some problems for the bar, paralegals, and the public. Paralegal Code of Ethics | Fremont College

As you pursue your degree at Fremont College, study the paralegal code of ethics and prepare yourself for a rewarding career. A Paralegal’s Job Involves Many Responsibilities Although paralegals continue to take on greater and greater responsibilities in the legal world, they are still not allowed to give legal advice, argue cases in court, or set legal fees. So, one of the most important things to keep in mind once you have completed your paralegal training is to maintain very strict professional and ethical standards throughout your paralegal career.
