I’m looking for advice from anyone who is currently either an attorney or paralegal. I’m 34 years old, with a business/finance background, and considering going to law school next year. I want to learn tax law, and return to the investment world with my degree and knowledge. But I’ve read postings here from people who regret having gone to law school. Martin Burger had a spotless track record practicing law for more than half a century. But that didn't stop the state's highest court from reprimanding him for kicking back a percentage of the business that a Filipino-speaking paralegal brought in to his Palisades Park practice. San Francisco District Attorney, Kamala Harris, Lays Off Lawyers ...
San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris laid off at least five staffers and two attorneys last week. Harris blamed the City by the Bay’s $500 million budget deficit. The staff laid off include three paralegals and two investigators. The office had 253 total employees, including 123 lawyers, before the layoffs. City Attorney Dennis Herrera and Public Defender Jeff Adachi have said that they have not had to lay anyone off for budget reasons. But they, like Harris, have cut vacant positions. Since traveling to London to study the paralegal profession there I have continued to monitor developments there. The legal educational system there causes some problems for the bar, paralegals, and the public. The study of law requires a four year undergraduate degree in substantive law followed by more study on procedural law followed by an apprentice type contract with an existing law office. Unfortunately, the universities are pumping out about twice as many law graduates as there are apprentice contract slots. He's been here for about a year and is applying to law schools to start a year from now. I don't fully understand how paralegals can spend time here and still decide they want to go to law school.
