Luckily with laid off workers in California I got the BOGW waiver so my ABA approved paralegal program was free. It took me one year to get my certificate and I don't regret it. I did learn a lot about how to draft complaints, pleadings, use BAJI and CACI and draft contracts. However, I keep searching for a legal assistant or paralegal position and I can't find ANYTHING!
