The Value of Intern and Externships

These experiences are extremely valuable and give you real life exposure to the career that you are working towards. As a part of Harrison's commitment to a lifetime of Career Development Assistance, students can find information on internships from a variety of sources from their campus Career Services staff members. It is important to take your internship seriously, you never know what it could turn into. The following is a story from a recent graduate that shows that hard work can land you a job! For the past six years Harrison College Medical Program Coordinator, Jean Heath, has been [more...]

First-Year Student Is Overwhelmed with Jobs, School, Family ...

First-Year Student Is Overwhelmed with Jobs, School, Family Responsibilities I am in my second semester (freshman year) of college. It’s hard for me because I am working two jobs and I am taking care of my deceased nephew’s two little boys and I am living on my own and I am doing this ALL BY MYSELF. Both of the boys have health problems and I can barely afford childcare. I am behind in my classes, and I really want to do well so I can graduate on time. How can I stay focused in school when I have so much going on in my life? The Career Doctor responds: The first year of college is [more...]

What college education is required to become a veterinary assistant?

No. You do not have to go to college to be a veterinary assistant. The veterinary assistant schools that are out there don’t teach anything practical. They are usually on-line programs and don’t teach anything hands on. Veterinarians want hands-on experience in their assistants, not someone who took on-line classes to learn about the different breeds of dogs. Veterinary assistants are mostly responsible for feeding dogs and cats, cleaning cages, and doing other cleaning activities around the clinic like mopping, sweeping, dusting etc. You don’t need an education for that. Some clinics [more...]

Ten Most Overrated Chicago Bears of My Lifetime | Bears Headquarters

Thayer has turned a lack of talent in football to a crappy career as a broadcaster. I would love to put Jeff Joniak on this list, but its for players only. Man, it is like listening to Niles North  High School (a shout out to my old school) students broadcasting the game. 9. Steve McMichael Good player, not a great player. Since he has retired, people have built him up to be a superstar, but he is anything but that. Not taking away from his contributions, but come on, at best a good player. 10. Adewale Ogunleye Man, for a guy that talked a lot he really never backed it up on the field. [more...]

Books Received: January 2010 - SFScope - Science Fiction, Fantasy ...

Penn Cage was elected mayor of Natchez, Mississippi—the hometown he returned to after the death of his wife—on a tide of support for change. Two years into his term, casino gambling has proved a sure bet for bringing new jobs and fresh money to this fading jewel of the Old South. But deep inside the Magnolia Queen, a fantastical repurposed steamboat, a depraved hidden world draws high-stakes players with money to burn on their unquenchable taste for blood sport and the dark vices that go with it. When an old high school friend hands him blood-chilling evidence, Penn alone must beat the [more...]

THE PHOENIX RISING: THE MOST LIVABLE U.S CITY

Each year Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business attracts some of the brightest master's degree candidates in the country. But the admissions staff occasionally has to sway prospective students with their choice of top schools who wonder why they should relocate to Pittsburgh, Pa. "Pittsburgh has a really great cultural scene. We have a great ballet and a great symphony that travels the world and performs to packed houses, and there's a restaurant scene that's much more diverse than it ever was when I was growing up," says Wendy Hermann, director of student services for master's [more...]

The man behind the masculine cupcake | nyunews.com

NYU alumnus David Arrick makes cupcakes. Not the huge, cakey ones you'll find at Crumbs, or the colorful, sprinkle-covered creations from Magnolia Bakery. His are liquor-soaked, flat-topped monstrosities, which have been jokingly dubbed "mancakes." "Men like food. Men like booze. Men like beer. Men like bacon. Put them into a cupcake and it's a no-brainer," Arrick said.Arrick, 42, has had a variety of careers in his lifetime. But the newest addition to his resume, "bakery owner," is one of the most stressful. On a normal day Arrick wakes up, checks the delivery schedule, waits for the cupcakes [more...]
