Daily Kos: Cheers and Jeers: Tuesday
History will be cruel because...gay adoption---and even gay marriage---is already a reality in many states and will happily spread across the country, gaining legal and social approval and making such statements as "children are not puppies" seem as outdated as "Blacks will destroy unit cohesion if the military tries desegregation." Verdict: History will be CRUEL. Mike Huckabee is smart enough to know better, but chooses instead to sell his soul to the lowest common teabagger. He'll always have a portrait hanging in the Arkansas statehouse, but other than that he'll mostly be a political [more...]

Joel Miller* * Assistant Professor, Rutgers University, School of Criminal Justice, Center for Law and Justice, 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102, USA; joelmi{at}rutgers.edu. Abstract In 1999, the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry heavily criticized ethnic disparities in stop and search (disproportionality), triggering a national reform effort to make the tactic fairer and more effective. Analyses of searches under core powers using up to 12 years of annual data from 38 police force areas in England indicate that aggregate disparities showed no improvement following the reforms. Christie's plan proposes that no one would be offered NJ STARS scholarships for the 2010 graduating class, and in 2011, NJ STARS would only be offered to the top 5 percent of New Jersey high school graduates, a fact that Ryan is certain would effectively kill the program. “From the big picture, it’s just one more budget that continues to disinvest in higher education,” Ryan says, pointing out that over the last 25 years, the overall percentage of the budget going to higher education in New Jersey had been cut from 10 to 5 percent, and that when it comes to higher [more...]

NJ Left Behind: Schundler Presents NJ's Race To The Top Application
Bret Schundler is taking Arne Duncan at his word. The U.S. Education Secretary told states recently that the Race to the Top competition would reward “political will, leadership, and the courage to make the best choices for students” instead of “watered-down reforms with broad buy-in." For our second try in the federal competition, NJ will bank on that commitment. At a press conference this afternoon, the Commissioner allowed, “I would love to have NJEA’s partnership, but I don’t think we’ll get it.” So NJ will move ahead – minus teacher union support – with an application [more...]

Students from research-intensive medical schools and those with advanced degrees tend to pursue an academic career more than other students. What are the steps needed to become a college professor as a ...
I disagree with the other posters. The penultimate professional degree in the arts is the MFA. With an MFA, you are qualified to teach at a university level, in the arts. In other fields, you’d need a PhD. But in graphic design, you need an MFA. But that’s not all you need. You also need to be doing work at a very high level, professionally. You need a professional portfolio, with work for clients. You may want to take a couple years between undergrad and grad school to work in the field. This would make you a stronger candidate both for grad school admissions, and for finding a job as a [more...]
