Canadian and American differences | Toronto Breakfast Vestments

In Canadian schools, the students learn to read and write, do arithmetic, and understand the environment.  In am American school, children are brought in and rubbed against a vast felt shoe until they get hungry, then they are put in box with an egg incase they get bored. Did you know that when Canadians die, because Terry Fox ran to Manitoba, we turn into a fine gold powder?  It’s a good thing we were accidentally born within the same geographical boundaries as Terry Fox, otherwise, we’d do what Americans do when they die, which is gradually decay. It is now an established scientific [more...]

Thrown out of court | Macleans.ca - Canada - Features

There's another concern paralegals share: cost. "It's going to become a lot more expensive to practise," says Wanda Forsythe, chair of the school of legal and public administration at Toronto's Seneca College. And those costs will be passed down to the public. Thanks to a new education requirement, people wanting to take up the profession will now have to pay college tuition for a two- to four-year program; after that there are insurance costs, and a $500 application fee to the law society. Experienced paralegals could skip the education requirement if they paid $1,075 and wrote an exam. (Of [more...]

She put both her voice and songs on display Tuesday evening, when she marked both the release of her album and her issue of Exclaim with an in-store performance at Criminal Records, following a proper show at the Garrison the night before. Backed by a two-piece band, Georgas turned in set that showcased both her subdued and scrappy sides (alliteration unintentional) in front of a decently-sized, if maybe overly respectful audience. Not to suggest that there should have been acting out, but sometimes the between-song silence at in-stores just feels… awkward. But she seemed grateful for the [more...]

ontario's first accredited paralegal program!

A London careers college has become Southwestern Ontario's first school to offer an accredited course to train paralegals. Westervelt College has had a paralegal program since 1997, but until recently the field was largely unregulated, said Westervelt vice-president Richard Doerr. That began to change in 2006 when the province passed legislation requiring mandatory post-secondary training and licensing for paralegals.  Paralegals are not qualified lawyers but often act as legal agents, typically in areas such as traffic offences, small claims court and some legal tribunals. The Law Society [more...]
