Neo-Trad of the Week
With travel and languages in my blood, I graduated from Georgetown University in the midst of the last recession and moved to Paris, where I put that degree in Foreign Service and my rusty French to work by baking cookies for an American store. I fell in love with my student guide when I visited Kellogg (Northwestern University’s business school) – we’ve been married 16 years and have two very adorable (most of the time!) boys and two very adorable (most of the time!) labradoodles (my girls!). After a number of interesting jobs including being the editorial assistant to Jackie Onassis [more...]

My fourth child was born at the beginning of a two year stint in the ‘real world’ working as a paralegal for the New York law firm Davis, Polk and Wardwell (a wonderful experience). I was in the first year of my PhD course at the University of Birmingham when I was offered a job in the Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts at Brigham Young University. Remarkably, BYU had found itself in need of someone with training in Syriac, bringing meaning and purpose to my studies. So, eight years after giving up my place at BYU I returned with my wife and four children to work [more...]

paralegal by day rockstar by night
I left Louisiana in Dec 1987 and moved to Houston. I attended Art Institute of Houston and graduated with a degree in Commercial Art in January 1990. I worked as a men's clothing designer at a company called Scope Imports from Jan 1990 to Oct of 1993. I left there and did this and that for a while (mostly the things 20 somethings do when they are single) then decided I had better go back to school. I attended University of Houston in pursuit of an Art History degree from Spring 1995 thru Fall 1996. PCC program first in state to get American Bar Association ...
After two years of an intensive process, formal approval was granted by the ABA in February at its annual convention in Florida. Micky Ryan, a lawyer and chair of the program’s advisory council, said that the approval provides assurance to both students and the legal community that PCC is providing an educational experience grounded in practical paralegal preparation. A point of interest is the program’s Cascade Campus law library, which is not common for community colleges. The Paralegal Program, offered by PCC for more than 35 years, provides a comprehensive paralegal education to more [more...]

Many people are caught up in life and don’t want to spend years going back to school and racking up debt, but oftentimes you don’t have to. A career as a paralegal offers salaries of 34-60 thousand dollars per year and the industry is expected to grow by 28% over the next few years according to US Department of Labor statistics. There's another concern paralegals share: cost. "It's going to become a lot more expensive to practise," says Wanda Forsythe, chair of the school of legal and public administration at Toronto's Seneca College. And those costs will be passed down to the public. Thanks to a new education requirement, people wanting to take up the profession will now have to pay college tuition for a two- to four-year program; after that there are insurance costs, and a $500 application fee to the law society. Experienced paralegals could skip the education requirement if they paid $1,075 and wrote an exam. (Of [more...]

One Response to “If you got your Associates in Paralegal Studies & the program was ABA approved does it matter?” Comment from Libraryanna Time May 4, 2010 at 4:57 pm I think attorneys mostly look at what you know. I suppose if you want to work at a high power big firm, it could matter. ABA lack of approval can be for reasons unrelated to quality. For example, my law school for years was not approved because they offered part time programs. Didn’t make sense, but that’s the way they are. See if they are accredited/certified by someone such as the state bar. I’m a paralegal, but [more...]

Southington, Cheshire court merger discussed at Law Day program ...
Similar consolidations are happening all over Connecticut. Meccariello said state lawmakers crafted the legislation to reduce the number of probate courts in the state from 117 to 54. Probate courts are mostly self-sustaining, sending the fees they collect for their services to a state office, which then pays the judge and staff. Southington pays less than $10,000 each year toward maintaining the probate court, springing for items such as paper, postage and scanning documents. Cheshire, which is expected to account for one-third of the cases, will contribute a proportionate amount of money, [more...]
