Fragomen Del Rey Announces Associate Layoffs

Posted by Brian Baxter UPDATE: This story has been updated with new information regarding the number of paralegals laid off by the firm. New York's Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy confirmed on Friday that it had let go between seven and eight associates, along with staff. "We in selective offices, it wasn't firmwide," says firm chairman Austin Fragomen, Jr. The 220-lawyer immigration firm, which The American Lawyer's Susan Beck profiled in the magazine's annual Am Law 200 issue in June, has 17 offices in the U.S. and Europe. What are the benefits of getting an ABA approved Paralegal Degree?

3 Responses to “What are the benefits of getting an ABA approved Paralegal Degree?” Comment from ipguy Time May 3, 2010 at 5:09 pm I am not sure I fully understand what you are trying to ask, but here goes. The only reasons you would want a paralegal degree would be either for personal development or to get a paralegal position. Some law firms will only hire paralegals from ABA-approved schools. The more educated you are, the more money you make. Making more money is the benefit that most paralegal students seek. In theory, an ABA-approved school provides a better education than a [more...]

I’ve reviewed a number of news reports on Mr. Price’s situation. Perhaps the most comprehensive and [more...]

Recession Proof Career Path – Paralegal

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the paralegal field is expected to grow at a rapid pace. In addition to that increase, factor in job openings due to retirements, career changes, and other elements, and you have a perfect field for those interested in the field of law. Furthermore, many people who want a work in the field of law are not willing to go through four years of undergraduate study then spend another two or three years in law school. The paralegal career track is perfect for these people. What Does a Paralegal Do? The paralegal does a lot of the work an attorney can do, [more...]

Is becoming a patent lawyer a good idea? :IQ Lawyers

Now, debate is intensifying among law-school academics over the integrity of law schools’ marketing campaigns. David Burcham, dean of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, considered second-tier, says the school makes no guarantees to students that they will obtain jobs. OK, I have to interject right here. Did a dean of a law school basically say you could go through all the nonsense of getting into law school, law school, ethics exam, bar exam and you should not expect some sort of gainful employment after you are through? You might as well go to Las Vegas and put your tuition money on the [more...]

Sheep Submission: Timeslips + Chicago = Hell | The Collared Sheep ...

I lived in Chicago my first year out of college and it was hands-down, the worst year of my life. I moved to Chicago in the fall of 2002 to study improv, but somehow found myself working as a paralegal, barely doing comedy, hardly making enough money to pay my bills, and wading through a sea of depression. God knows the paralegal gig didn’t help the crippling depression part. I’m eager-to-please and hardworking. I tend to obey rules blindly and follow directions, so things at the law firm started off swimmingly. Each paralegal tallied his or her time using a program called Timeslips. [more...]

Is Paralegal Education Necessary?

Paralegals help make lawyers look organized. They typically sort, prepare, photocopy, and index documents, while also interviewing witnesses or conducting hearings. Most beginning paralegals should have a bachelor's degree, according to the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA). Roughly 50 percent of paralegals do, with about 25 percent having two-year associates degrees. However, trends indicate that most potential employers expect entry-level paralegals to have a four-year college degree. Any additional training a paralegal might have, whether it be in medicine, [more...]

Burger told the disciplinarians he didn’t know he was violating rules — a claim undercut by the fact that he paid through a third-party entity, the board said. Still, his unblemished record and his acknowledgement that he did wrong were mitigating factors. Thrown out of court | Macleans.ca - Canada - Features

There's another concern paralegals share: cost. "It's going to become a lot more expensive to practise," says Wanda Forsythe, chair of the school of legal and public administration at Toronto's Seneca College. And those costs will be passed down to the public. Thanks to a new education requirement, people wanting to take up the profession will now have to pay college tuition for a two- to four-year program; after that there are insurance costs, and a $500 application fee to the law society. Experienced paralegals could skip the education requirement if they paid $1,075 and wrote an exam. (Of [more...]

What are the limitations of using a paralegal for family court ...

Being unsatisfied with a previous attorney is a poor reason for trying to go without one, but if winning or losing, and to what degree, is irrelevant to you, by all means use a paralegal. In my 37 years as a lawyer, I have had cases in which the client wanted a particular outcome, and often withheld information to try to make sure of the outcome. Naturally, the client blamed me when the outcome was not what the client wanted. I never guess or predict what a judge or jury will do. It depends on State law, and you didn’t tell us where you are. Only a few States allow non-lawyers to provide [more...]

And by the way, you don't need an NP or and MD to diagnose a sprain. There is a lot of stuff you don't need any health care contact to manage. Attorney fees awards in California Family Law proceedings

Virtually all attorneys who work in California Family Law cases are aware of the fact that the Courts can order another party to pay their client’s attorney fees and costs. However, many are not aware that the Courts have the power to order that the other party to the proceeding pay a reasonable amount to allow a party who is “In Pro Per” to retain an attorney in a timely manner before proceedings in the matter go forward. The relevant statutes are contained in Chapter 3.5 of the California Family Code, sections 2030 through 2034. These statutes can be very useful when used in the right [more...]
