The 2005 "Best Places to Work" program study showed that, contrary to popular opinion, employee satisfaction didn't depend on salary. The most given answer as to what makes a company a great place to work is employee empowerment. And what constitutes employee empowerment? I believe it comes down to a few basic principles, the first of which is encouraging an ownership attitude. ENCOURAGE AN OWNERSHIP ATTITUDE I train staff in practical working skills for a law firm: ethics, professionalism, attorney/staff communication, hard skills, etc. At the beginning of many seminars, staff come [more...]

Improve Your Business By Sleeping
Full disclosure: I don’t get enough sleep and I do it erratically, sometimes working at 3 or 4 in the morning on a project. No one expects me to do this. I do it because I can and because it beats tossing and turning when I can’t sleep. Entrepreneurs have busy minds, thinking up ideas, scanning the horizons for new opportunities. It can be hard to shut down. But ample sleep is important for your own peace of mind and for your business. How much sleep is constantly debated but generally 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is important for your average adult’s functioning. Continued lack of [more...]

As I get older, and reflect on life’s milestones, I doubt they’ll get much bigger than this one—Feb. 8, 2010. Three months ago today. It’s the day I officially assumed responsibility for Austin, bringing him home from Kentucky so that he and I could become a family. I’m not entirely sure why, but it has me feeling a little emotional today. Maybe it’s the recognition that it’s Mother’s Day weekend. That means Father’s Day is not too far away. For a time, I expected that the significance of Father’s Day would not live beyond my own Dad (who celebrated his 91st birthday a few [more...]

In general, McGinn’s staff makes less across the board than Nickels’. But, I asked the mayor yesterday, isn’t that in part because most of them have little or no experience in city government? The Case of the Golden Tablet - Strange Lawsuits - Legally Weird
A long time ago, archeologists discovered a beautiful golden tablet buried in the sands of the ancient Assyrian Empire, now known to us as Iraq. After many delays and a small diversion to Portugal during WWI, the golden tablet made its way to a Berlin museum. The tablet did not rest there long, but was supposedly "liberated" by the occupying Russian army after the fall of Berlin at the end of WWII. The tablet finally found a home with a Holocaust survivor who himself had moved to New York. After his death, his children inherited the tablet, and in a 'no good deed goes unpunished' [more...]
