Broward school cuts: You get what you don't pay for
> Posted by Michael Mayo on April 27, 2010 10:01 AM The looming cuts at Broward schools can be explained fairly simply: Rising costs versus flat revenue means something's got to go. In , the something is half the pay and hours of non-core teachers, the ones who teach physical education, arts, music and oversee libraries (or "media centers," as they're now known.) Predictably, this has upset teachers, students and parents. It all boils down to this: You get (and don't get) what you pay for. And in Florida, where many residents are retirees who have already raised families and don't care about [more...]

Balancing the statutes that comprise these requirements is extremely challenging when practicing a fundamentally-confidential exercise such as the law. Coral Gables linebacker Denzel Perryman made sure to think of a good plan if football isn’t his intended career path. Growing up, he always had an interest in watching TV, but it wasn’t for cartoons or silly reality shows. Perryman stayed glued to science-oriented shows. “I’d just sit home and skip through channels and that stuff would pop up on TV,” Perryman said. That interest consumed him and has him thinking of studying forensic science in college in hopes of pursuing a career in that field if he doesn’t end up a professional ball player. In Florida men seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown can be fined. In Pennsylvania, it’s against the law to tie a dollar bill on a string on the ground and pull it away when someone tries to pick it up. In France, it is against the law to sell an “E.T” doll, because of the law forbidding the sale of dolls that do not have human faces. In Switzerland, it is illegal for a man to relieve himself while standing up after 10pm. In Florida, it is illegal to fart in a public place after 6 P.M. on Thursdays. Skirts and Scuffs: Women in NASCAR….SPECIAL
I thought I’d take a different angle with this edition of Women in NASCAR (WIN). While we all celebrate our moms on this day, I thought I’d write about a NASCAR mom whom we all know and love. It wasn’t a difficult choice as far as whom I wanted for this piece, so I was so excited when I was able to connect with Mary Lou Hamlin. She accepted my invitation graciously and I have to say she is every bit the Mom I thought she was. Mary Lou was the youngest of six siblings raised, for the most part, by her mother. Her five siblings were all born in Cincinnati, and Mary Lou was born in Tampa, [more...]
