Why Does Freedom Wax and Wane? | Mercatus

New Zealand, of course, drew its “Westminster” system of government from Great Britain. As in New Zealand, the British system of government has fewer checks and balances than does the American. This enabled Thatcher to push through more change than did Reagan, though the lack of checks and balances meant that the British economy had become more socialized in the first place. The New Zealand reforms have enjoyed mixed popularity with the voters. In the initial stages of the reforms, the voters did not demand more economic freedom. Rather, voters demanded that something be done to reverse [more...]

These larger, multidisciplinary projects require a scientific research methodology [more...]

Are there any alternatives pills like sumycin, zoloft, antabuse ...

Developing a comprehensive web portal database is, of course, not possible between now and July 1.  HHS has proposed, therefore, a three-step approach.  Step One. First, it is asking insurers to submit by May 21 certain basic information about their products to put up on a website by July 1.  The requested information includes issuer contact information; administrative information like enrollment codes; enrollment data by product; product names and types; whether enrollment is currently open for each product; product availability by zip code or county;  links for insurer websites, [more...]

Students Practice Citizen Diplomacy in Syria – University News ...

The course espouses the concept that an average citizen can engage diplomatically as a representative of a country or point of view. The trip took about six months to plan. The Mason students were joined by a group of Syrian conflict resolution students from the Syrian International Academy, led by Hind Kabawat, Gopin’s CRDC colleague in Damascus. A few students from Tufts, American, Georgetown and George Washington universities also participated. Specific meetings during the trip included an emotional reunion between Gopin, an ordained Orthodox rabbi, and Grand Mufti of Syria Sheikh Ahmed [more...]

Professor Emerita Brown Passes Away – The Mason Gazette - George ...

I accomplished all of this exactly as Lorraine Brown and I planned back in the fall of 1999 — one course at a time. I checked in with Lorraine semester after semester after semester to report my progress and to tell her how much nearer I was to my goal. Always, she was my biggest supporter. She delighted in every single one of my accomplishments, sometimes even more than I did. I will be graduating on May 15, 2010, with a Doctor of Arts from George Mason University. I am devastated that Professor Brown will not be at the convocation ceremony to see me hooded. How I wanted her to be there [more...]

The New Population Bomb

Share Print Email Forty-two years ago, the biologist Paul Ehrlich warned in The Population Bomb that mass starvation would strike in the 1970s and 1980s, with the world's population growth outpacing the production of food and other critical resources. Thanks to innovations and efforts such as the "green revolution" in farming and the widespread adoption of family planning, Ehrlich's worst fears did not come to pass. In fact, since the 1970s, global economic output has increased and fertility has fallen dramatically, especially in developing countries. The United Nations Population Division [more...]

'We Are All Smithian's Now': New PhDs from GMU

As I have written before, you can get a very conventional education at GMU if you want to -- you just have to be wise in your course choices and be entrepreneurial in looking for opportunities in Computational Sciences, Center for Social Complexity, School of Public Policy, etc. to supplement your standard training in the first-year. But why would you? As Pete Leeson often stresses to students, the signal isn't sent by class selection, the signal is sent by school selection! (I think he might have first heard that from me, but I will give him credit for it). Go dig up Klamer's interpretations [more...]

The New Population Bomb

But twenty-first-century international security will depend less on how many people inhabit the world than on how the global population is composed and distributed: where populations are declining and where they are growing, which countries are relatively older and which are more youthful, and how demographics will influence population movements across regions. SEE WHOLE [more...]
