Similar consolidations are happening all over Connecticut. Meccariello said state lawmakers crafted the legislation to reduce the number of probate courts in the state from 117 to 54. Probate courts are mostly self-sustaining, sending the fees they collect for their services to a state office, which then pays the judge and staff.
