Degrees of Happiness | Penn LPS
The list above is just a sampling of the professions represented among the 150 or so graduates of Penn’s master’s degree program in applied positive psychology (MAPP). (The professional comedian, by the way, is Yakov Smirnoff CGS’06—perhaps best known for his role in Moscow on the Hudson with Robin Williams, and the catchphrase “What a country!”—who currently performs at his own theater in Branson, Missouri.) Dozens more MAPP graduates teach or are administrators at elementary and secondary schools. About 20 percent have changed careers after completing the program, becoming [more...]

The Worst Paying College Degree « Zwinglius Redivivus
Bible, Theology, Church History, and Modern Culture Blog Dr Jim West I was unsurprised to see ‘Religion Major’ on the list of worst paying college degrees and yet I would contend that those with that degree (and the usually following Master of Divinity degree and its brethren) are the lowest paid of the lot (in spite of claims to the contrary). The only people in ministry who make real money are mega church pastors- and they’re – by and large- heretics. So heresy pays, theology [more...]

15 Best and Worst Jobs of 2010 - CBS MoneyWatch.com
Who enjoys the best job in America? Actuaries do. That’s right. Actuaries can lay claim to the title of the No. 1 best job of 2010. At least that’s the opinion of CareerCast.com, a popular job search portal, which has released its annual list of the best and worst jobs. Out of 200 careers, roustabouts snagged the dishonors of having the worst job in America. I can understand why people wouldn’t want to be a roustabout. It’s grimy and dangerous and who wants to be working on an oil drill when a hurricane is hurtling towards land? But why do actuaries enjoy a primo job? Here’s the [more...]

How the University Works: Higher Education and the Low-Wage Nation ...
The state legislators (who represent American public) moved HiEd down in their priority list. Taxpayers are no longer willing to bear the costs of education (Californians voting agains tax increases for their education in 2009 is a good example of the shiftinng priorities). They want bigger homes, more expensive cars, bigger TV screens and they want it now and on credit. They even want more education they are not willing to pay for collectively. At the same time American workers produce less and of lesser quality. It is no surprise that money available to universities started to dry up at the [more...]

Certificate Programs May Prove More Worthwhile Than College Degree ...
Someone who already holds a B.A. in English and is now hoping to work as a paralegal, for instance, needs training, not another degree, according to Traylor.
