Sophomore class elections have fierce competition
“Campaigning was crazy this year,” sophomore class secretary Diana Ho said. “I think Diana even put a flyer in the boys’ bathroom, and I was considering passing out Ho-Hos for people to vote.” In addition to posting flyers and posters throughout the school, several sophomore candidates created Facebook groups to gain voters and rally their fellow classmates. Gordon said that the extensive campaign measures were necessary for candidates to win positions in office. “A lot of people who haven’t been in office did a really good job of campaigning to let everyone know who [more...]

adamfoxie blog: The Gay McCarthyites
Although he graduated from Harvard, he did not do well because he paid a secretary to attend his classes and take notes in shorthand, which she later typed out for him. His fame on campus was not for his abilities but more for what he owned. He had good looks, money, and a black Cadillac convertible with a radio telephone. Cohn and Schine met each other through Judge Irving Saypol, a former boss of Cohn’s, and although the two men had very different backgrounds, they very quickly took up with each other. The consensus from Cohn’s family was that Schine was bringing Cohn out of himself and [more...]

Jennifer Dexter asked about implementation plans, noting that the effective date is “squishy.” The secretary said that there will be a decision within the next 6 to 8 weeks on which agency officials will have responsibilities for the program and establishing a framework for its administration. The actuarial piece will be very important; “we don’t want to repeat the mistakes of long-term care insurance.” Appropriations for implementation: she said that most of the funding that was provided [more...]

Paralegal duties?
I graduated in 2007 from a community college and my major was paralegal studies. I got a job a few months after and was the worst mistake i ever made. It was so boring i was counting the hours until i got to leave. I ended up only working for 1 mo. and the boss fired me over the phone. Funny thing is they never trained me in so i didn’t know how to put the things i learned from college to real life use. When i did make a mistake my boss and his "assistant" would bite my head off. It is not creative, you have to do it by the book or the way your boss wants it done. You would be looking at [more...]

Vicki Voisin - The Paralegal Mentor with Paralegal Career ...
What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I've always had an interest in the law and politics. While going to college I took a summer off to work as a receptionist in a law firm (I already had good secretarial skills, but no legal experience). Instead of returning to day time college classes, I continued to work at the law firm and went to college at night. The law firm promoted me to a legal secretarial position after only a few months, and the rest is history. 3. What is your favorite part of your job? This is the lesson being learned by the so-called boutique intellectual property law firm of Turocy & Watson LLP, where a legal secretary has filed a class action, charging that the firm did not properly pay the “class” of secretaries overtime. The case is docketed as Osolin v. Turocy & Watson, LLP et al filed in federal court in the Northern District of Ohio and charges a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.. Mary's View: Once upon a time, there were Secretaries.
My secretarial career path began after high school with a receptionist and payroll clerk job for an electrical contractor where I met my husband. Summer of 1973, my first forty-hour paycheck was a net of $59.02. I moved on to better things after a few months, wanting the Mary Tyler Moore lifestyle. Two jobs later, I took a position at the corporate offices of a world-wide manufacturer in Jessup, Maryland. Those corporate secretaries knew what was expected of them, and I learned…don’t be a minute late arriving to work, don’t leave a minute early, and don’t take more than your [more...]

Paralegal Power to the People! Santa Monica - Dean McAdams ...
After attending UCLA paralegal school and then working in law firms, insurance companies and reading law for over twenty years I understand how the entire system really works. The founding fathers of America never went to law school or took bar exams; they simply "read" law. After a hard day of splitting logs, Abraham Lincoln read Black's Law by the firelight and then went out and became a successful lawyer because Honest Abe solved people's problems for a very reasonable one silver dollar. And Abe may not have always filed a lawsuit to solve those problems, which is why I am so into [more...]

Now, debate is intensifying among law-school academics over the integrity of law schools’ marketing campaigns.
