School Library Journal nailed it when they note, “{r}arely is a sentence turned so well, a setting so remarkably established, and a plot so evenly polished as in this book” (but oh my, if you want to read the novel, don’t read the rest of the SLJ review, which pretty much lays out — and with no apologies — the shocking ending for you. Spoilers: bad). And Booklist wrote: Hartnett’s prose is beautiful, filled with piercing, original imagery that, like David Almond’s, explores the savage, animal instincts in humans, especially children. The climax is shocking, and the telling, [more...]

TrickyMaus: INTER-VUE: JOHN BLAINE FROM "THE CHO SHOW"
Around how may years ago did you start out in beauty school? John Blaine: I started my career close to 20 years ago. I, like a lot of teens, was kind of a party boy. I liked to hang out with my friends and stay up all night. I lived with my mother in South Pasadena at the time; it was a upper white community and I had all sorts of friends I would get into trouble with. So when I turned 19 years old my mother had it with my antics and told me to find something to do or else "your ass is out!" I was spoiled financially by her, so the thought of getting my Neiman Marcus credit card taken away [more...]

Floyd Norman : Toon Tuesday : Getting a head with Blaine Gibson
After all, back in 1957, Blaine Gibson was a top Disney animator while I was simply a starstruck kid just out of school. However, Blaine was gracious as always, and he considered me a colleague on the film. For those of you who don't remember Blaine Gibson, he's probably best known for his work at Walt Disney Imagineering doing beautiful sculptures on such attractions as "Pirates of the Caribbean." Blaine began doing sculpture when he was five years old. And that's why Frank Thomas asked Blaine to do sculpts of the Good Fairies -- Flora, Fauna and Merryweather -- while we were working on [more...]

No Big Red: Tyler Gabbert Pulls a Blaine on Cornhuskers | Campus ...
Maybe NU didn't want to BS 'em like some schools … “oh sure, will find a place for you, you'll be a starter as a freshman, and I have this 'hostess' I'd like you to meet.” I'm not saying that's MU, it just that it has never been NU's ... a recruit is different than renting a helicopter to fly to a high school football game and make a huge scene in front of a bunch of people. I guess it worked for Pinkie though. I hope the chopper was worth it to get a career back-up QB. [more...]

The Beauty of Life: First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Dina Gregg
You could say that art school (at Boston University) led to beauty school (Blaine) led to makeup school in Paris (Ecole Fleurimon), but I think that it all started much earlier. When I was in first grade, my sister Anika and I participated in Verdi's Aida (presented by Sarah Caldwell's Boston Opera Company, no less), and for a couple dozen performances we were bodypainted with brownish stuff that I can only describe as being akin to slip used for ceramics. Then our blonde heads were SPRAY PAINTED black! And voila! We were Egyptian. I was also a ballet dancer for many years -- there is a photo [more...]
