ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — More than 400 New Mexico residents have not retaken a course allowing them to carry concealed weapons after state officials suspended their permits because their firearms training did not meet state requirements. Officers from the Department of Public Safety offered free courses to 1,027 New Mexico residents who had taken classes from firearms instructors Stephen Bare, of Carlsbad, and Raymond Lunsford, of Loving, over about three years. “We made arrangements to train them … so those folks who were carrying concealed would not be in danger and neither would the [more...]

Dictionary! iPhone app a no-frills reference library on your ...

Sitting at my desk is a dog-eared copy of the AP Writers Manual, a thesaurus and of course, a dictionary. That’s all well and good, but I don’t take great pleasure in lugging around books if I’m writing on the go, so I was pretty excited when I was asked to review the free Dictionary! iPhone app. Dictionary! is about as bare-bones as you could find in a reference iPhone app. Upon installing, you have the entire iPhone app at your fingertips. It doesn’t access the Internet at all, so whether you’re in a bomb shelter with no 3G or Wi-Fi or a Starbucks, you’ll have the same [more...]

Barack Obama trades his stance on NAFTA [Karl]

For Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense, think Senators Biden, Kerry, Dodd or Mitchell, and former General Wesley Clark. Think former President Bill Clinton as special envoy to the Middle East (perhaps in tandem with former British PM Tony Blair). Think Nobel Prize winner Al Gore as special envoy to renewed global warming talks. Think former Senator Sam Nunn as special emissary to Putin’s Russia, or former Centcom commander Admiral William Fallon as special emissary to Iran. And still on the bench to be deployed would be Richard Holbrooke, Madeleine Albright, and Strobe Talbott. The [more...]

The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier ...

Quality points are given for challenging AP courses as compared to your peers. The harder the competition at your High School and the more people apply to the same university the lower the probability you have to be picked over your classmates. Unless, of course, you are the one to apply early decision and have all the goods. Subjectivity always is a confounding variable. A wonderful essay read by an Admissions Officer at 3am on Saturday may work as well as the car built by the worst crew on the last Friday of the quota month. But chance does favor the prepared mind so make your essay special [more...]

(AP) — On a day when gruesome details emerged about how a women’s lacrosse player at Virginia wound up dead in a pool of her own blood and a player on the men’s team was charged with killing her, the teams decided to play on in tribute. Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage said in a statement late Tuesday that the men’s and women’s teams “will represent the University of Virginia as they always have” if selected for the NCAA tournament, as expected, and play to honor the [more...]

Can Woods ever be the same on the course? | PGA Golf Tour - Golf ...

Hank Haney spent Friday in Las Vegas, teaching a comedian how to play golf. Across the country his star pupil wasn’t finding much to laugh about as hemade his way around TPC Sawgrass just trying to make the cut. Why Haney was taping a reality show with Ray Romano instead of working withTiger Woods wasn’t exactly clear, especially when Woods’ swing is clearly amess. Contrary to the rumors sweeping around the state of Florida, though, Woodssaid the swing coach was still solidly in his employ. “Hank and I talk every day, so nothing’s changed,” Woods said. What has changed is this: [more...]

Oklahoma: Pro-Life Nanny State | Mother Jones

Statistics collected by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network show that fetuses brought to term in Oklahoma have higher incidences of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal birth defects than in the US at large. Oklahoma babies, for example, are 63 percent likelier to be born with gastroschisis, a condition in which the internal abdominal organs—particularly the intestine—are pushed outside the baby's torso. Such babies require immediate—and potentially risky—surgery after birth, and even survivors may have limited digestive functioning and costly, challenging lifelong [more...]

The bizarre, feeble attempts to beat back the scandals that are collapsing the Catholic Church continue, and in this piece by the AP’s Nicole Winfield, we get a peek at the man closest to Pope Benedict, a man with him for over a decade, who rarely turns up in the media other than in stories about how hunky he is, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein.Benedict’s personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, spoke out Tuesday for the first time since the scandal broke, defending the pope’s prolonged silence on the German cases and charging that Benedict had done more than anyone else to crack down [more...]

U of I Admissions: Blog » Blog Archive » Intro to Course Registration

I only needed to make one decision, and that was to add an elective course. Easy enough, right? Second semester, I had a couple more options: there were still the mandatory introductory classes I needed to take, but I was able to take two elective courses this time, which were French and an Honors class. The amount of electives you can take increases as you start to finish off those introductory classes and get into the meat of your major. So what would I have done differently? Not much actually, since I didn’t really do anything. Looking back, it may have been possible for me to add in [more...]

AP Downplays Large GOP Turnout Advantage in Early Primaries ...

The Associated Press managed to report on yesterday's primaries in North Carolina, Indiana, and Ohio while muddling the incontrovertibly disastrous results for Democrats in those states. Even while touting the races as harbingers for November, the AP failed to extrapolate the trends right before their eyes. In short, turnout for Republican primaries in all three states was up almost across the board, while Democratic turnout "dropped precipitously," in the words of National Journal's Reid Wilson. The AP noted the "exceptionally light in Ohio and North Carolina," failing to mention [more...]
