The Common Ills: Rewards from a 'Cosmic Moral Supreme Court'?

He had repeatedly been threatened and warned to stop his investigative reporting but his courage and professionalism pushed him to continue (http://en.rsf.org/iraq-journalist-gunned-down-in-kirkuk-22-07-2008,27900.html). Iraq's big news this week is the merger of the two biggest Shi'ite blocs into a power-sharing coalition thereby bypassing the biggest vote getter (Iraqiya) in the March 7th elections. Michael Jansen (Irish Times) reports: The proclamation of the sectarian merger has sidelined the secular Iraqiya bloc headed by Iyad Allawi which won 91 seats, the largest number, and should [more...]

Shirat Devorah: Why the American Dream is becoming the American Doom

This was led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who wants to make the Middle East a nuclear free zone. The world has done nothing to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons and now wants Israel to declare its weapons! This is a direct attack on Israel's defensive capabilities. There is no other nation in the Middle East with nuclear weapons, so it is a direct attack on Israel. On Wednesday, the United States began negotiations with Israel to divide the land and Jerusalem. While meetings were taking place, the US stock market was literally in chaos and at one point dropped 1000 points! In [more...]

Secretary Gates wants 'hard, unsparing look' at military spending

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has a clear and pointed message for the US military establishment: Take âa hard, unsparing look” at what you’re costing the US taxpayer during difficult economic times, and look for serious belt-tightening measures. In a speech Saturday at the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas, Secretary Gates said: “In each instance we must ask: First, is this respectful of the American taxpayer at a time of economic and fiscal duress? And second, is this activity or arrangement the best use of limited dollars, given the pressing needs to take care of our [more...]

Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is proposing a new law that could potentially strip Americans of their citizenship if they’re involved with foreign terrorist organizations. The Perils Of Prop 15 | Fox & Hounds Daily

Hidden away on the June primary ballot is Proposition 15, titled the California Fair Elections Act.  While the measure has not received a lot so attention so far, it is a classic example of the law of unintended consequences.   Disclosure: I am one of the ballot pamphlet signatories opposing this measure.  I signed the rebuttal argument for a couple of reasons.  This is a system of public financing of elections placed on the ballot by the legislature, ostensibly to test public financing in the Secretary of State's election, beginning in 2014.  However, the authors conveniently [more...]

Book Review: A Nation Rising by Kenneth C. Davis

In 1804, while serving as vice president of the United States under Thomas Jefferson, Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton, who had been the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, to a duel, in which Hamilton was mortally wounded. Upon leaving office in 1805, Burr was involved in a shadowy conspiracy intending, it was rumored, to seize Spanish lands in what is now Mexico and set up an empire independent of the United States. Burr was arrested and brought to trial on charges of treason, but was acquitted because of lack of evidence. Chief Justice John Marshall, acting as presiding judge at [more...]

History will be cruel because...gay adoption---and even gay marriage---is already a reality in many states and will happily spread across the country, gaining legal and social approval and making such statements as "children are not puppies" seem as outdated as "Blacks will destroy unit cohesion if the military tries desegregation."
